This was my trunk o' junk as a teenager. It was hot pink, and I distressed it, painted it and now it is a night stand in the guest room. I used Vaseline to cover the brass and then hosed it down with Rustoleium. Then, wiped off the areas covered with Vaseline. After all that dried, I sprayed with acrylic spray to give it a shine and a somewhat protective coat.
Lessons learned: Apply Vaseline liberally. A thin coat may not wipe off as well. Also, if you can remove some of the brass, do it. This trunk was on the verge of collapse, so I didn't think any pieces could be removed and then go back on without destroying it.
